Human Resources Careers for Those Who Earn a Bachelor’s Degree
A degree in human resources can land a graduate in a wide variety of jobs. The skills and knowledge that students obtain proves useful in many different areas.
Most work within human resources departments. But those can vary, depending on the industry. For example, a person working at a law enforcement agency will face very different challenges than one working at an investment bank.
And even within human resources itself, there are a number of jobs and areas where a graduate with a Bachelor in Professional Studies in Human Resources can work. Those include areas such as dealing with conflict resolution between managers and workers or helping create a successful recruitment strategy.
Human resources is a challenging field that is more important than ever to organizations both large and small. With the quality of online degree programs now offered from schools such as Geneva College, attaining a degree to enter the field is more convenient than ever.
Workers in Demand
Human resources is also a job that is in demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 7 percent increase in human resources specialists by 2026. They also report a median salary for all of those in the profession in the United States of $60,330 as of May 2017.
HR managers also are in demand. The BLS projects a 9 percent gain in the number of HR managers by 2026. The median pay for the position was $110,120 in May 2017.
In Pennsylvania, the annual salaries are higher for both occupations. For HR managers, it’s $130,190. For HR specialists, it’s $66,980.
By earning a bachelor’s degree in human resources, graduates bring expertise in a number of areas in the workplace. It also can open the door to a wide variety of jobs.
Working in Human Resources
Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in human resources are prepared for many different positions within the field.
They include human resources generalist, manager and jobs specialization in compensation and benefits, workplace safety, conflict resolution, labor relations and payroll management. Human resources workers may also focus on recruiting and retaining employees, as well as training for new and current employees.
Job duties vary depending on the industry and what area of human resources a graduate works in. They typically include some of the following.
- Recruiting employees, matching them to jobs that suit their talents and filling needed positions to improve organizational operations
- Developing an interview and selection process for new employees
- Working with organizational executives to develop pay, bonus and vacation packages to attract and retain talented employees
- Bringing expertise to questions from other departments on personnel issues – including disciplinary actions, equal employment opportunities and sexual harassment issues
- Developing a positive, supportive culture within the workplace
Graduates in human resources also are well prepared for jobs in areas outside of HR departments. For example, they have the expertise to take on leadership positions in areas such as social services and in the criminal justice system. That can include running a community center or working with those who are in the criminal justice system.
